Role Description ANIMAL CARE ATTENDANT
Organization: Bonnyville & District SPCA
Reports To: Shelter Manager
Job Purpose.
Under the direction of the Shelter Supervisor/Shelter Manager, the Animal Care Attendant is responsible for the overall care of all the animals within the shelter. The responsibilities will vary based on the current needs of the shelter but can include providing cleanliness of cages/enclosures/shelter areas, feeding, exercising, caring for all shelter animals, and providing customer service.


Duties and Responsibilities
❖ Observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease, and discontent.
❖ Thoroughly and routinely clean and disinfect all areas of the shelter including cages, enclosures, kennels, etc.
❖ Give attention and affection to animals in their care.
❖ Maintain animals on a specified diet ensuring daily feeding, watering, and exercise
❖ Wash, dry and fold laundry, clean food/water dishes and litter boxes.
❖ Unpack, label and stock shelter supplies and donations.
❖ Assist with providing treatments prescribed by veterinarians.
❖ Assist with transporting animals to the veterinary clinic when necessary.
❖ Assist with adoptions and intakes.
❖ Miscellaneous administrative duties such as answering the phone, welcoming visitors, entering data, social media updates, etc.
❖ Other duties as assigned.
Personal Qualifications
❖ Knowledge of animals and animal behavior is an asset.
❖ Knowledge of proper methods of animal restraint is preferred.
❖ Able to work in a fast paced and demanding environment.
❖ Able to work in a team setting.
❖ Reliable and punctual.
❖ Proficient in MS Office and social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram).
❖ Exceptional customer service skills
Training
❖ post-secondary school diploma or equivalent is required.
❖ Valid Alberta Driver’s License is required.
❖ One to two years’ training, education or experience in animal care is preferred. Working Conditions
❖ Work is normally performed inside and outside
❖ Exposure to unpleasant odors and noises.
❖ Exposure to bites, scratches, and animal wastes.
❖ Possible exposure to contagious diseases.
Physical Requirements
❖ Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
❖ Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
❖ May be required to use strength or agility in capturing and restraining animals.
