Job Purpose:


The Finance Officer oversees key financial operations within the Finance Department. This role involves ensuring compliance with financial policies and supporting strategic financial planning. The Finance Officer is responsible for accurate financial reporting, payroll management, and contributing to the overall financial stability of the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Oversee the processing of invoices, payments, and receipts, ensuring timely and accurate entries.

  • Completing payments and controlling expenses by receiving, processing, verifying, and reconciling invoices

  • Reconciling processed work by verifying entries and comparing system reports to balances

  • Ensuring outstanding balances are updated with credit memos that are due

  • Paying employees by receiving and verifying expense reports using company-specific accounting software

  • Verifying vendor accounts by reconciling monthly statements and related transactions

  • Maintaining historical records of all invoices, reports, receipts, and cheques by saving documents properly on the network

  • Assisting other departments with equipment or product purchases, tracking assets and accounts for acquisition

  • Confirming subcontractor billed working hours, and projects are inline with contracts.

  • Manage the payroll process, including benefits and statutory remittances, ensuring compliance with internal policies and external regulations.

  • Maintain and oversee the filing system for all financial transaction records, ensuring accessibility and confidentiality.

  • Ensure all financial operations adhere to the organization's policies and procedures and recommend improvements where necessary.

  • Lead or support special financial projects as directed by the Finance Director.

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior finance staff, fostering professional development within the team.

  • Perform additional tasks as requested by the Finance Director to support departmental goals.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:



  • Minimum: Diploma in Accounting, Payroll, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Commerce, Accounting, or a related field.

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, payroll processes, and financial reporting standards.

  • Proficiency in accounting software, spreadsheets, and database management systems.

  • Ability to analyze complex financial data and provide actionable insights.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to lead a team, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Understanding of First Nations culture, governance, and community dynamics is an asset.

  • Willingness to learn.

  • Office environment with extensive use of a computer.
