SE Design has a career opportunity for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician in our Cold Lake, Alberta office.


Position Description:

  • Under general supervision, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician performs a variety of technical duties including data collection, data analysis, database management and data output tasks of moderate difficulty, related, but not limited to the utilities, Capital Improvement Projects, residential, public, or commercial parcels.
  • This position is responsible as the lead in collecting geospatial data from the field through geodatabase or through other publicly available sources, and using that data to prepare visual representation including, but not limited to, maps, publications or spreadsheets. This position demonstrates proficiency in the full range of duties and works independently with minimal supervision by management. The GIS Technician must also be willing to support department operations in the field, as necessary.

Position Duties:

  • Convert and analyze infrastructure-related asset data, and generate maps, reports, and other types of visualizations to support staff in analyzing and presenting information to clients and stakeholders.
  • Build and update GIS databases by imputing new data and verifying accuracy of existing data while adhering to standards specified in the geodatabase and other applicable guidelines.
  • Perform on going maintenance of GIS datasets associated with infrastructure assets, such as roads, sidewalks, bridges, signs, culverts, guardrails, manholes, valves, waterlines, sanitary sewer lines, and buildings.
  • Utilizes GPS equipment to field verify infrastructure assets or project areas when required.
  • Design of database as directed by management.
  • Performs routine data management tasks, such as data validation and correction, queries and editing in GIS.
  • Develops, tests and implements quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) processes to ensure GIS data accuracy and integrity.
  • Interprets as-built drawings, CIP construction plans, engineering plans, recorded maps, deeds, and related source documents and incorporates them into GIS.
  • Assists staff and stakeholders in the use of GIS software and the use of custom GIS applications.
  • Prepares reports and provided statistical support documentation, using spatial analysis, to inform management of asset conditions and data inconsistencies.
  • Assists with the integration of geospatial data and asset attributes with a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Conducts research and provides recommendations on modifying procedures and developing workable solutions for managing GIS data problems.
  • Performs duties in support of SE Design to which the GIS Technician is assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Post secondary degree or diploma in geographic information systems (GIS) or equivalent course work at a technical or vocational school in GIS, or other GIS-related fields with 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of current principles, practices, terminology, and trends in Geographic Information Systems usage and modern land bases mapping application theory.
  • Proficiency in ESRI Arc suite of GIS software products, including ArcGIS, ArcSDE, ArcCatalog, and Spatial Analyst.
  • Knowledge of relational database principles, geo-database design, AutoCAD, MapGuide, Illustrator, and SQL.
  • Knowledge of computer applications related to the work including word processing, database, presentation, graphics, speadsheet, and inter- and intranet web applications.
  • Define programs, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; identify, analyze, evaluate, diagnose, and solve system problems.
  • Superior document management experience.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License
  • Must be mobile and willing to work on a combination of field and office work
  • Ability to work extended hours (overtime) during peak seasons including weekends
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional written and verbal English communication skills
  • Strong report writing skills
