About this opportunity:


The Panel/Relief Operator plays a meaningful role in supporting the Operations team by running control systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations. This position involves supervising and adjusting processes to optimize performance, addressing operational issues as they arise, and ensuring that safety protocols are followed. The operator works closely with the team to maintain smooth plant operations, supports the implementation of procedures, and assists in coordinating maintenance activities. Additionally, this role provides mentorship and guidance to team members, ensuring alignment with operational goals and contributing to a culture of safety and continuous improvement.



While this vacancy is currently at Foster Creek, this posting could be used to fill vacancies at any of the three Oil Sands Operations sites. (Christina Lake, Foster Creek, or Sunrise, based on business need)



Work Environment:


FOSTER CREEK


  • This is a full-time employee position working a shift of 7 days on 7 days off, 12 hours per day, Wednesday to Tuesday
  • Foster Creek has full-service camp facilities
  • Depending on your place of residence and your shift rotation, bus and/or air transportation to/from site is offered from designated departure points in select locations
  • Foster Creek is serviced by flight Hubs in Calgary and Edmonton


What you’ll do:


  • Handles operational upsets optimally by applying DCS trends to ensure that control of the process is being maintained and optimized, and rotate positions to ensure personnel are familiar with changes in process and procedures in the plant and on the panel
  • Assists the Coordinator/Shift Engineer in reaching key operational targets and provides input to LOTO development
  • Collaborate in safety meetings, update crews on safety topics and concerns, and ensure that all plant activities for assigned areas operate safely while bringing up issues that require higher authority for input and resolution
  • Conduct Handover Meetings with outgoing Panel / Relief Operators, complete and review e-Log entries and provide training, guidance, and mentorship to other team members as required
  • Supervise critical metrics for the facility, perform troubleshooting, and adjust processes as needed; while serving as the main point of contact for Fluid Dispatch resources and supporting maintenance schedules by ensuring equipment readiness and ordering of chemicals
  • Collaborate with Senior Operations Advisors and DCS Technicians to resolve operational issues, such as nuisance alarms and process deviations, while using the Bypass Tool to ensure unnecessary bypasses are removed
  • Document and verify Flare/Vent logs, work with permitting processes as a delegate for the Coordinator and ensure adherence to Health & Safety standards and policy commitments
  • Identify and mitigate risks related to conflicting schedules, simultaneous operations (SIMOPS), and other operational activities to ensure safety and compliance


Who you are:


Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:


  • Legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Preference for an operator holding a Third Class Power Engineering certificate which is required to operate the Steam Panel
  • 5+ years of SAGD Thermal Heavy Oil Operations
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to take direction from Coordinator / Shift Engineer to ensure smooth day-to-day operations of the unit
  • Ability to advise day to day operations from the Control Room Panel
  • Strong technical skills to complement power engineering qualifications

As this position has been identified as safety sensitive, employment of a final candidate selected for this position will be conditional upon successful completion of required pre-employment medical and alcohol/drug assessments.



For this position you will be required to maintain a Class 5 driver's license, a satisfactory driving record, and adhere to the appropriate Company policies and guidelines. A driver's abstract will be one of the background checks requested in the pre-employment screening for the final candidate.
