Position Overview and Responsibilities
Pakan School, situated in the heart of Whitefish Lake #128, is dedicated to providing a culturally enriching and holistic education experience to our students. As an Indigenous community school, we emphasize the importance of land-based learning alongside a strong physical education program. Our mission is to foster an environment that respects and celebrates Indigenous traditions while promoting physical well-being and academic excellence. Pakan School is seeking a passionate and dedicated Physical Education and Land-Based Teacher to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering engaging and culturally relevant physical education programs and incorporating land-based learning experiences that connect students with their cultural heritage and the natural environment.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive physical education curriculum that promotes physical health, teamwork, and personal growth.
- Plan and execute land-based learning activities that integrate Indigenous knowledge and practices, fostering a deep connection to the land and community.
- Create a positive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment that supports the diverse needs of all students.
- Collaborate with fellow educators, community members, and Elders to enhance the educational experience and promote cultural awareness.
- Assess and monitor student progress, providing feedback and support to help each student reach their full potential.
- Build positive relationships with students by providing meaningful and current instruction;
- Advocate for student concerns and provide students with clear expectations, ongoing feedback, and opportunities to broaden their skills and knowledge.
- Attend all necessary meetings, and participate in special events and school celebrations;
- Attend in-services and workshops as approved by the School Principal;
- Maintain accurate records of student progress;
- Other tasks will be assigned as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Education, or a related field. You must be registered or be eligible for teacher certification in Alberta;
- Fluency in English and being able to speak, read, and write Cree is an asset;
- Experience in developing curriculum and teaching kids, and a commitment to promote physical activity, wellness, and cultural awareness
- Strong presentation skills with the ability to develop and deliver instructional material;
- ability to establish and maintain rapport and trust with students; must have a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills;
- Honest, trustworthy and flexible and experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset;
- A satisfactory criminal record and a child intervention check are required.
- Working knowledge of computers, including Microsoft Office and other relevant computer applications;
