Job Purpose:


The school liaison is committed to making positive connections between students, staff and parents of John N. A. Janvier School.  The school liaison provides a supportive, challenging academic environment where students can develop and reach their full potential.  The school liaison is the “bridge” with parents, students and teachers in the areas of school improvements required by providing feedback to ensure academic success.  The school liaison ensures that students have the right to be successful and the responsibility to learn curriculum to the best of their abilities.


 


Duties and Responsibilities:


The school liaison will work closely with a variety of other professionals and para-professionals.  The school liaison partnership may include but is not limited to working with teachers, student-aides, speech therapists, school psychologists, social workers, and health nurses.



  • provide necessary assistance to the school in meeting the social, emotional, cultural and academic needs of the student by offering advice and recommendations and by assisting staff in establishing opportunities for home/school communication as required

  • carry out home visits ensuring a communication link between home and school is maintained

  • provide educational assistance for students under the direction of the classroom teacher either in the classroom, by small groups, or on a one-on-one

  • assist school in tracking students’ achievement, attendance, and behavior by completing and maintaining up-to-date records

  • set up counseling services for students who are experiencing personal, social or behavioral problems

  • help students improve study habits

  • refer students to appropriate services and agencies when required

  • perform supervisory and extra-curricular duties

  • keep a daily diary of activities

  • keep informed by attending staff meetings, in-service sessions, conventions, workshops, interagency meetings etc.

  • assist with transition to provincial schools

  • assist with student hygiene

  • assist with resolving conflict

  • other duties as assigned by principal and/or vice principal


 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:



  • Bachelor’s degree in education or social work a definite asset

  • Minimum five years experience working with elementary/junior high students

  • Class 5 Driver’s License (Clear Driver’s Abstract)

  • Team player, with a self motivation to work alone at times with little supervision

  • Computer knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace an asset

  • Certificate in first aid an asset

  • Knowledge of Cold Lake First Nations culture, government, language, and community dynamics an asset.

  • Criminal Record Check Clearance

  • Child Intervention Check Clearance


 


Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:



  • School environment

  • Repetitive tasks (i.e. typing, sitting, standing, etc.)

  • The school liaison will be on duty at 8:15 am to 4:00 pm. The school liaison works standard school hours, but may spend additional evenings and weekend hours supervising extra-curricular activities or attending meetings.
